Dire wolf (Aenocyon dirus) was a large canine, distinct from modern wolves, and lived during the Ice Age. Unlike other large animals, small predators like the dire wolf survived the extinction event. It weighed 60-70 kg and had a bigger head and stronger jaws than today’s wolves. Dire wolves hunted in packs, preying on large animals like bison and wild horses, competing with other predators. They survived longer than many other large species but eventually went extinct around 10,000 years ago due to climate change and loss of prey.Dire wolf postcard
