Artist's notes

The giant ground sloth (Megatherium americanum) was one of the largest sloths, growing up to six meters long and weighing four tonnes. It had massive claws used for pulling leaves and defending itself from predators. In the Argentine Pampas during the Ice Age, the environment was cool and dry, with trees scattered throughout. Sloths had a slow metabolism, requiring little food, which allowed other animals to thrive. They hibernated in winter, digging tunnels with their claws for rest. Humans hunted these slow-moving creatures, as shown by preserved footprints of a hunting strategy involving distractions and spears.
