Artist's notes

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) lives in the Arctic, relying on sea ice to hunt seals. During the Ice Age, it roamed much further south, even reaching Central Europe. Polar bears mainly feed on blubber from marine mammals and cannot survive without ice, as they hunt seals at breathing holes. Most Ice Age animals went extinct, but polar bears survived due to their harsh environment and isolation. Today, however, climate change threatens their survival by shrinking sea ice, leading to longer ice-free periods each summer, making it harder for them to find food.
