Artist's notes

The toxodon (Toxodon platensis) was a large, unusual animal about the size of a rhinoceros, with a rodent-like head, horse-like teeth, and eyes positioned like a hippo’s. It was native to South America during the Ice Age and adapted to a variety of habitats, including rainforests, savannahs, and grasslands. It survived for over five million years but went extinct around 8,000 years ago, possibly due to hunting by early humans. The toxodon’s strange features and adaptability made it a unique part of South America's prehistoric fauna.
