Artist's notes

The woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) was a vital member of the mammoth steppe's ecosystem, using its large sabre-shaped horn to shovel snow and dig for food in winter. It likely cleared areas for smaller herbivores like horses and rabbits. Adult rhinos were mostly safe from predators, but their young were preyed upon by cave lions, hyenas, and sabre-toothed cats. Ice Age humans hunted them, as seen in cave paintings and sculptures. The last woolly rhinos lived around 14,000 years ago, but their extinction was likely caused by climate change and human hunting, as their slow reproduction rate couldn't sustain their population.
